Somebody I meet rubs me up the wrong way
What do I say?
Do I trust what I feel, and let bad feelings show?
Do I trust what I know?

I need to look beneath the surface
To learn to love my enemy
There's something beautiful I'm missing
I need Your Grace so I can see
The sign of You within that person
Somehow You're hidden there from me
I need to grow so I can see You
And embrace reality
'Cause You are hidden deep beneath the surface

What do I need to face in myself now to grow
That this person can show?
What's the part of myself that I don't want to see?
What is crippling me?

I need to look beneath the surface
To learn to love my enemy
There's something beautiful I'm missing
I need Your Grace so I can see
The sign of You within that person
Somehow You're hidden there from me
I need to grow so I can see You
And embrace reality
'Cause You are hidden deep beneath the surface

Sometimes I'm too obtuse for You to teach
Humility seems always out of reach:
"Hey Lord, I feel I'm right
Please just support me with Your Might
So I can win the fight"
Yeah, right...

Like, maybe I'm a Pharisee
Maybe I'm not blind enough to see

I need to look beneath the surface
To learn to love my enemy
There's something beautiful I'm missing
I need Your Grace so I can see
The sign of You within that person
Somehow You're hidden there from me
I need to grow so I can see You
And embrace reality
'Cause You are hidden deep beneath the surface
Yes, You are hidden deep beneath the surface

Luke 6:27-36

But I say to you who hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. To one who strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also, and from one who takes away your cloak do not withhold your tunic either. Give to everyone who begs from you, and from one who takes away your goods do not demand them back. And y as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them.

If you love those who love you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. And a if you lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to get back the same amount. But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, for he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil. Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.
